Sunday, September 17, 2006, a rather cold day, for me at least, this early in the fall. The game was our Rockhurst Hawks vs. the Greyhounds of Indiana, and it would turn out to be a rather gut wrenching game.
The first half of the game started out as what seemed to be a game of "keep away." Suddenly, it got really intense. I was quickly drawn into the game by the first shot on goal by the Greyhounds. Fortunately, goalie Chad Becker blocked it, giving our guys some extra time with the ball. Then, the action picked up. The ball changed possession numerous times, and constant saves from our goalie kept the Hawks in the game. Unfortunately, with less than 15 minutes left in the first half, the Greyhounds scored a goal. I think that goal pushed the Hawks, because with less than 10 seconds left, #21 Spencer Martins scored a goal, but it was not counted.
The second half was even better than the first. The guys really kicked it up a few notches, making it an "edge-of-the-seat" half. The whole time, I felt what a Hawk grandmother nearby seemed to be feeling as well: "Come on, come on….SHIT!" I was constantly on edge as the minutes flew by. However, the guys seemed to start winding down. Then it came, with less than a minute left, #13 Eric Peterson scored the goal that tied the game, sending the teams into overtime.
With 10 minutes on the clock the Hawks got a second wind, unfortunately, it wasn't enough for a goal. I, like most of the fans out there that day, seemed to be on edge during that last 10 minutes. It was constantly, "OH, OH, OH….ahhhh." Just when all hoped seemed to be lost, #8 Adam Johnson, scored the winning goal.
So, to sum it all up, I'd like to quote a Hawk dad, " With 8 shots and 7 saves, we outplayed them." Way to go Hawks!!!
