While the success of Spring Awakening was tremendous, The Rockhurst Theater Players expect an even greater hit with the upcoming musical, Urinetown. Beginning Thursday, November 9 and running through Sunday, November 12, this excellent comedy should prove to be a crowd pleaser.
The story of Urinetown is simple, yet complex. The characters live in the title city, where there is such a terrific water shortage that private toilets are outlawed. As fees rise higher and higher at the public restroom, the people become more and more rebellious. Throw in a love story slightly reminiscent of Romeo and Juliet, and you have the foundations for an intense production.
However, in the sarcastic style of Bertolt Brecht, an early 19th century German dramatist, this play aims to make fun of itself and the musical genre; the result is a thrilling comedy that will leave you rolling in the aisles and rushing to the restroom.
Proclaimed as "better than The Producers" by Time Magazine, Urinetown was nominated for seven Tony Awards and won three in 2002. The cast of Rockhurst's production expects the same amazing performances that garnered fame for the musical's Broadway run.
Matt White is a part of the production. "This cast is amazing. It's high energy; there's lots of dancing, and great music, singing, and acting."
He added, "Rockhurst will love the performance. The set is fantastic. There's a lot of hard work and effort in it. It's a lot of blood, sweat and tears," he concluded as a tear came to his eye.
Urinetown runs November 9-11 at 8pm, with a Sunday matinee at 2pm.
