In Kansas City, Thanksgiving means more than turkey, stuffing and pumpkin pie; each year over 280,000 glittering bulbs illuminate the night sky over the Country Club Plaza marking the beginning of the holiday season and the preservation of a city tradition that began in 1930.
This year the ceremony began earlier than usual because of the Chiefs night game against Denver, but thousands still crowded the streets. Laura Boersma of Los Angelas, California said "I know how much people love football here, and I was surprised it was so crowded even though there was a game on."
"This was the very first year I ever saw the lighting. It was so cute; it felt like Disneyland" explained Boersma.
For Kelly Jordahl of Lee's Summit, the lighting ceremony has always been a part of her holiday tradition. She admits, "The most important part for me isn't the lights anymore. I love the atmosphere and the people I go with. Sometimes it's family and sometimes friends, but no matter who I share it with, the night is always special."
The lights will come on at 5 p.m. from now through January 14. And twinkling lights are just the beginning of the attractions found on the Plaza.
Shops have extended holiday hours from November 24 through December 30, open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday. This magical season is also the perfect time to enjoy a horse-draw carriage ride through the beautiful shopping district.
