The 2006 Women's Volleyball Team season came to an abrupt end in early Nov. with a 2-3 loss to Lewis. This was one of the few losses this season for the Hawks as they went 26-5 for the year and 14-2 in conference play.
The Hawks were geared up to play in Regional's, but did not get invited due to some unfortunate luck. The Hawks were in the top 7 teams that would be invited for Regional's, but with the loss to Lewis and SIUE losing the conference tournament it pushed the Hawks out of the top 7 and left them the odd man out.
Even though, in this reporter's opinion, the Hawks were given the shaft, they showed some amazing ability to play as a team. The Hawks started the season off hot, winning the first nine games, and just got hotter, winning another nine straight games, beating teams such as: Wayne St., Indianapolis, and Northern Kentucky.
"Getting off to a great start and playing well in conference play," was the high point of the year for Coach Rietzke.
Nathalia Rivera, sr., outside hitter, and Mandi Wolf, soph., libero, were named to the Daktronics All-Great Lakes Region second team by a vote of the region's sports information directors.
Rivera averaged a team-high 3.73 kills per game and 4.5 points per game. She was also second on the team with 3.63 digs. Rivera was named first team All-GLVC and was chosen Player of the Week in the GLVC twice this season.
Amanda Hydorn, jr., knows how much Rivera played a part in the team's success, "She was the most consistent in playing. She was a strong player for us on the front and back row. She had great serves and was a smart player."
Other players such as Hydorn and Rachel Fowler helped propel the Hawks into an amazing year with a combined 437 kills and 356 digs.
The sophomores and freshmen also stepped up tremendously this year getting some help from players like Audrey Boese, soph., and Katy Hernandez, frosh., who played significant time this year.
The Hawks won't dwell on the bad breaks this year. They will just continue to practice and get better as a team, which will be a scary thought for opponents next year.
