How do you find space for living and lounging in a 12' x 16' dorm room? Many students decide to loft their beds to make room for futons, refrigerators, microwaves and extra storage bins. Some students make bunk beds out of both beds and arrange the furniture on the opposing wall. Others arrange everything in odd patterns and space saving orders. Decoration plays a large part in the dorm life for many students adjusting to the university. Each dorm building is arranged differently so there are a variety of decorative ideas that students use to make their rooms more like their home. Some students use colorful laps, others display pictures and picture frames of friends and family. Curtains over the window gives a room a comfortable homey feeling. Bright rugs and carpet make dorm rooms warmer, both physically and emotionally. Stereos, alarm clocks, lamps, books, pictures, refrigerators, clothes, microwaves, desks, chairs, and tables all have their place in a dorm room, along with laptops, video game boxes, and shoes. Arranging all of these articles that clutter up dorm rooms is an arduous task and may take a lot of imagination. Stores such as Target, Walmart, Bed, Bath, and Beyond, and IKEA provide attractive and exciting ways to decorate your dorm room. If any of the descriptions listed above describes your dorm room or you feel like you have a unique arrangement or decor please take a picture and submit it by email to Caitlin Irwin at irwinc@rockhurst.edu for a decoration/arrangement contest. The winning room will be featured as the "Coolest Room" at Rockhurst in the next edition of the Sentinel.
