"Where are you going for spring break Sara?"

Sara: "Panama City!"

"Oh cool! So are John, and Sue and Bill and Jan and Lisa and Kim and Rick and Mo..."

Spring Break is a week long vacation away form Rockhurst, so why spoil it by following the crowd all the way down to Florida?

Newsflash!!: You will run into at least ten people you know. Panama is not THAT big. So, mix it up a little bit! There are other fun spring break hot spots that don't involve everyone you know, or that does not empty your savings account.

It's possible to help others over spring break while having fun at the same time. Students around the world give up drinking and parties for putting together houses and churches in less fortunate areas. Some students travel to other countries but even around the United States there are towns and people rebuilding from disasters or building a new life.

Mission trips are easy to locate, a good idea is to talk to your church group or a close church minister in your area. Many churches already have mission trips organized or can put you in contact with some one who does. Everyone is always looking for someone willing to lend a helping hand.

If you don't feel like mission work is your calling and you are looking for more of a non-traditional spring break there are many fun areas to visit without the other half of the campus. As a Texan, I can name a few good places to go. Dallas, Austin, and Padre are some of the cities that are not too far away and have a lot of fun activities. The night life in all of these cities revolves around the "18 and up" clubs and bars downtown. Some of the unique features in Dallas are: Six Flags, Hurricane Harbor, the Ft. Worth Stock Yards, Billy Bobs, and of course, the Galleria shopping mall. In Austin the Alamo, lake Austin, resorts, 6th Street, UT and many other attractions bring in spring breakers every year. Finally, South Padre Island really speaks for itself. If you are looking for more of a beach scene Padre is the way to go!

The good thing about all of these places is that they are relatively cheap. A round trip ticket can be as low as 88 dollars if you want to fly. But, if you plan on taking a few friends with you it may be cheaper to drive down. A nine hour drive is only two gas tanks and 560 miles to Dallas and three hours further to Austin or five to Padre. I'll be in Austin soaking up the sun. Hope to see you there!
