- Rockstock is fast-approaching, and not surprisingly, most of the attention will be turned to Sister Hazel. They are the headlining band, but what about the other performers? I'm talking about the opening bands, which this year will include mini-headliner Minutes to Midnight and Midnight to Twelve. Opening acts provide an important service to a music festival as it is their responsibility to incite the concert-goers into a frenzy, ready to explode once the main act - this year Sister Hazel - takes the stage. With that in mind, perhaps next year voting should be extended to opening acts as well. I feel one option to consider is a Simon and Garfunkel cover band. No one can deny the tremendous contributions the duo's soothing songs brought to the music scene, and since the two have feuded and broken up multiple times, a cover band seems the most viable route. How can one not fall into a sublime state after hearing dueling acoustic guitars gently emit the likes of 'The Sound of Silence,' 'Mrs. Robinson,' and 'The Boxer?' I believe such an act would put the crowd in a quiet, energy-loaded state, ready to explode in a fury of dancing, hopping, jumping, and moshing. Unabashed excitement - what more could a headliner want an opening act to provide? Next year, put a Simon and Garfunkel band on the ballot, bring them to Rockstock, and prepare to chill.
- For the most part, spring semester 2007 has gone on without a hitch. Walking through Massman Hall to class each, however, has shown a void in the Rockhurst community. The Information Desk has been abandoned, left a lifeless, shadowed box. Its last tenant, Geoff Smith has since moved upstairs to the Financial Aid Offices. He works primarily with the Telecommunications Department. I, for one, enjoyed Mr. Smith's presence at the Info Desk, always willing to offer a 'good morning' as well as assistance with voicemail, ID replacements, and any other problems a student might have. He always seemed eager to help. The Roewe Report applauds everything Mr. Geoff Smith has brought to Rockhurst, and here's to hoping he will return to the Information Desk next year.
- The winner of the Sub of the Month is Ben Perkins with his Italian Stallion. You begin with a meatball sub and add three additional meats of Italian origin - salami, capicola, and pepperoni. With such a palette of plentiful protein sources, the Italian Stallion is a sub that even the Champ - Rocky himself - can enjoy before or after a big match. Congratulations, Ben.
- One final note on Rockstock. Please show up. A concert environment almost always benefits from a multitude of people, whether they listen to the music or just walk around the grounds. Also, attendance reflects upon Rockhurst. Bands talk, and no band likes to play in front of 100 plus crowds, so if Lower Bourke fills with enthusiastic fans, word should spread, and maybe, just maybe, bigger and better artists will perform for years to come. And if we're lucky, the reunion of Simon and Garfunkel.....but I'll settle for a cover band.
