The Sentinel busts the myths surrounding the paper
New writers and workers wanted!

Once again, the Sentinel is looking for new recruits, but there's a few myths about working for the paper that we need to dispel:
Myth #1: I need to be an excellent writer to work for the paper
Not necessarily. In fact, you don't even have to write for the paper. The Sentinel always needs people to sell ads, copy edit and work on layout. But you don't have to be a Pulitzer Prize winner to write for our paper. We are a student newspaper, and one of the reasons The Sentinel exists is for students to practice and gain professional experience.
Myth Status: Busted
Myth #2: I need past experience working for my high school paper.
Wrong. Have you ever applied for a job that requires 3-5 years of working experience? The Sentinel is that opportunity to get that job experience, and we aren't going to exclude anyone who wants to work.
Myth Status: Busted
Myth #3: Even if I write for the paper, they'll just give me all the bad articles that no one wants to write because I'm the new staff member.
False. Our writers pick their own articles. Often, the writers come up with the story lead on their own, or they pick from a bunch of staff member suggestions. We promise we won't assign you a boring or "BS" article. After all, no one wants to read a boring article, much less write one.
Myth Status: Busted
Myth#4: I need to know how to read to work for The Sentinel.
Well, there's not much we can do to help you out on this one. You need to know how to read. Sorry.
Myth Status: Confirmed
So there you have it. There's really no good reason why you shouldn't work for the Sentinel. You can get professional experience, meet new people, and have fun at the same time.
If you're interested in working for The Sentinel, send an email to
sentinel@rockhurst.edu. Or you can come to our first meeting Monday, August 27 at 9:30 pm. The meeting is in Xavier-Loyola Room 20, located in the basement. (Just ask the desk assistant if you get lost, and we'll have someone in the lobby to show you where you need to be.)
Now, normally, at the end of Mythbusters, they blow something up or destroy something, but unfortunately, we weren't allowed to bring our fireworks and green plastic army men into the Sentinel room. So if you're still craving for something to do and you're already burnt out on Facebook, visit our website, www.rockhurstsentinel.com, where you can browse through old editions of the Sentinel. And yes, we are always looking for any help for the online edition, so feel free to let us know if you're interested.
Have a great year, and we hope to see you joining the Sentinel!
