Never done theatre before? No problem! Business major? Doesn't matter! Speak Spanish? Even better! Player's, Rockhurst's resident theatre troupe, is gearing up for another great season, and there are plenty of opportunities for anyone and everyone to get involved.

The first school-wide show of the year is Approaching Zanzibar, a dark comedy by Tina Howe chronicling a family road trip from New York to New Mexico to visit a dying aunt. Auditions are August 27th and 28th in Mabee Theater. They're looking for five guys (play classical guitar? There's a part for you!) and four girls. There's one part that requires Spanish language skills.

For those more interested in musical theatre, auditions for Working are Saturday, September 8th. Vocal auditions are in the morning, and reading and call backs are after lunch. Working is an ensemble musical by Stephen Schwartz, the talented composer of Wicked and Godspell. There are tons of parts available for this large-cast show! Working gives a glimpse into the lives of 26 average American workers, so instead of a few main characters there are a plethora of small roles available to all kinds of people. Don't be intimidated by the thought of musical theatre! This show provides a great opportunity discover your talent within the supportive, non-competitive environment of Player's.

Second semester Players is presenting De Donde, a moving social justice piece by Mary Gallagher. De Donde explores the illegal immigration of refugees from a diverse set of viewpoints. This production requires a large cast of all kinds of performers. Some roles require Spanish language skills, so if you speak Spanish and want to try your hand at theatre, this is a show for you. Auditions are November 26th and 27th.

Even if acting really isn't your thing, Player's is always looking for technical help. Be part of the excitement of a theatre production by working backstage! If you're interested in lights, sound, building sets, costuming, ushering, or helping out backstage, drop by the Player's table at orientation, go talk to Susan Proctor in her office, find a Player's member, or just email me for more information (GriffithL@rockhurst.edu.)

Another great perk of joining players (after the great times and amazing people, of course) is the yearly trip to ACTF region V festival. ACTF is a theatre festival where you spend a week seeing shows and taking workshops about every aspect of theatre. Player's helps pay for the trip, and the more involved you are, the better the discount you get! This year's festival is January 20-26 in Omaha, Nebraska.
