The Spring Semester of the 2007-2008 academic year here at Rockhurst has begun. As spring suggests, it is a time for change. That means new classes, maybe new roommates, and yes, a new Rockhurst Sentinel. At the launch of this semester, new leadership has taken over your newspaper. Hello, my name is Brian Roewe, and I will be your new Editor-in-Chief of the Sentinel.

Before I present what the plans I have set forth for the new Sentinel, let me take a moment to thank my predecessor, Pat Sommer, who graduated with the commencement of the Fall'07 semester. Sommer had been editor for three years, beginning in the fall of 2005 as a sophomore co-editor. He took over as the sole editor-in-chief the following semester.

During his tenure as editor, Sommer has worked tirelessly, often by himself, to produce and publish a newspaper that would meet the expectations of the student body, faculty and alumni. Of his achievements he oversaw the reporting of major Rockhurst stories including the proposal of a new health and wellness center, the resignation of former President Fr. Kinerk and the search for and eventual inauguration of new President Fr. Corran.

Pat Sommer has given the Sentinel an admirable effort. The Sentinel staff thanks him for all this hard work throughout his tenure, and wishes him the best of luck in his future endeavors.

That being said, we must turn our eyes to the future. A change in leadership offers us a chance to review the current state of the paper and, where needed, make changes. That is exactly what I intend to do.

I offer two initial pledges. The first pledge I make to you the reader is to provide a respectable college paper with fact-based stories - both newsworthy and timely - on a consistent basis. I believe this is the essential purpose of a newspaper. It is what the reading populace deserves and what they should demand.

To achieve this, I plan to institute a greater structure to the Sentinel. Goal dates of publication have been set, and my staff and I will strive to meet them. This also includes set meetings and deadlines for the staff so better time management on both ends can be utilized.
