Due to the ever-increasing threat of email hacking, Rockhurst announced today that they would be implementing new uber-stringent password requirements.
Additionally, students, faculty and staff will be required to change their password every other day and cannot use any password that has been previously used. Under the new requirements passwords must be at least 54 characters long, but no longer than 72,137 characters.
All passwords must be random combinations of numbers, symbols and letters. They cannot contain any words that are listed in the dictionary. Also, they must contain at least 3 capital letters, 5 lower case letter, 2 numbers, 3 punctuation marks and 4 symbols.
“With all the security threats there are today, we just feel like this is the most simple solution,” Rockhurst administration said in a statement about the new requirements.
As far as ways to remember your password, administration suggested making up a simple pneumonic devise.
For example, if you use the password *Ay73’&HnbeJlt ,y,q,&12w*, you could use the simple saying “All young 73’ & Hot new bears earn Junk like toys, yaks, quilts, & 12 whales!*.”
Surely any college student should be able to remember something as simple as that.
Still, some students were not as receptive to the changes.
Rockhurst senior Andy Halaz said, “I have trouble remembering what day it is, let alone my password under the old requirements. How am I supposed to remember it now?”
Other students seemed to not mind the changes.
Sophomore Alex Primo said, “All of my teachers say I should check my email daily, but I never even use it. These new changes shouldn’t affect me. I don’t see what the big deal is.”
