Food in KC
Jerusalem Cafe
Cameron Summers
Many people might not realize the diversity of food available in Kansas City. While I’ve reviewed places that serve Chinese food, hamburgers and Mongolian barbeque, there are yet more options. Take, for example, the Jerusalem Café.
With two locations (one in Westport, one on 39th Street, in the former location of Zaki’s), the café is a place where one can sit for hours drinking tea or Turkish coffee and smoking a hookah (which is a word that one can never get tired of saying. Try it).
In addition to this, there are a large number of entrées, both with and without meat, though they can be a little on the expensive side. There are, however, a variety of modestly-priced gyros and sandwiches that are much more reasonably priced. Most meals come with a Greek salad, which is a bonus.
That all being said, the service is good and the atmosphere is fitting. The upper floor is a smoking area, and also the location of the aforementioned hookahs (a wide variety of shisha is also available, though use of the hookah is very expensive, and you should remember that before you purchase the use of one).
While the prices are high, the food is delicious, and it’s actually within walking distance of campus, provided you don’t mind walking to Westport--which isn’t terribly easy, but is certainly doable. So, if you’re hungry, and you find yourself in Westport for any reason, give it a shot. You’ll definitely enjoy it. And you’ll probably get to say "hookah" a bit.
Moreover, it’s probably one of the best places to get a baklava in Kansas City.
