The season is winding down for Rockhurst Players Theatre, but one of the most exciting and energetic events of the year has yet to come. Theatreworks - Players’ night of completely student-written, student-produced short plays - is coming up this week.

Theatreworks is unique because every aspect of the show is produced by students. The short plays are selected from submissions by budding Rockhurst playwrights and then put into action by student directors. Everything else, from acting to costuming to stage design and tech work, is also completely managed by Rockhurst students.

"Theatreworks is unlike other theatre experiences because it’s really laid-back, and you’re working only with fellow students," says sophomore Maggie Herrmann, who can be seen acting in "The Wedding Party" by Courtney La Chance, directed by Marqwan Sirls.

Theatreworks is a time for everyone to relax and have a lot of fun doing theatre. Because the plays are short - 10-15 minutes - they require a lot less of a time commitment from everyone, giving students the opportunity to branch out and try new things. Actors direct, techies act and everyone has fun.

For writers, Theatreworks offers a rare opportunity for students - the chance to have their work fully produced.

"It’s a really exciting opportunity to get to see something I wrote brought to life on stage," says senior Jon Volkmer, whose play "Desperately Seeking Mary Jane" will be featured in next week’s show, directed by Courtney La Chance.

Don’t miss this one-of-a-kind theatre experience! Theatreworks 2008 is Wednesday, April 16 and Thursday, April 17 at 8:00 pm in Mabee Theater. There is no cost for admission.
